Everything You Need to Know About Australia's Favourite Dream Destination

The Maldives sits at the top of nearly every Australian traveller's bucket list and for good reason. Powder-white sand, water so clear it looks photoshopped, overwater villas straight out of a screensaver, and reefs teeming with manta rays, whale sharks and turtles. It's the kind of place that ruins all other beach holidays for you. We give Maldives trips away regularly at EHG (almost monthly…but not quite), so we've put together this guide for members planning their dream getaway.

Where exactly are the Maldives?

The Maldives is an archipelago of around 1,200 coral islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, sitting roughly 750km southwest of Sri Lanka. Only about 200 of those islands are inhabited, and around 150 are private resort islands. The country is one of the world's lowest-lying nations, most islands sit barely a metre above sea level, which is part of what makes the water feel so impossibly turquoise from the air.

The capital, Malé, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, packed onto a single island just two kilometres long. But almost no visitors stay there, the magic happens out on the resort islands and atolls.

How to get to the Maldives from Australia

There are is only one direct service between Australia and the Maldives provided by Maldivian Airlines and Luxury Escapes, so you'll connect through one of the major Asian hubs. The most popular routes:

  • Singapore with Singapore Airlines or Scoot: total flight time around 14-16 hours including layover

  • Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines or AirAsia: total flight time around 14 hours

  • Dubai with Emirates: longer but a comfortable premium option, around 19-22 hours

  • Doha with Qatar Airways: similar to Dubai, frequently the best-rated route on the best rated airline

  • Bangkok with Thai Airways: around 15 hours with layover

You'll fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. From there, getting to your resort is an adventure in itself, depending on the resort's location, you'll transfer by speedboat (for nearby resorts, around 30-90 minutes), seaplane (the iconic option, 20-40 minutes with views you'll remember forever), or domestic flight plus speedboat (for the more remote southern atolls).

Pro tip: Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours, so book your international flight to arrive before 3pm if your resort is a seaplane transfer.

Best time to visit the Maldives

The Maldives has two seasons:

Dry season (November to April) is peak time, sunny skies, calm seas, low humidity. This is when you'll get the postcard photos. It's also peak prices, especially over Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Wet season (May to October) brings shorter rain showers, more humidity and occasionally rougher seas, but also significantly lower prices and fewer crowds. Many travellers find the trade-off worthwhile, rain rarely lasts all day, and the islands stay green and beautiful. May and October are the "shoulder" sweet spots.

For Australians, the dry season conveniently aligns with our cooler months, making May-September the smart value window if you can handle the occasional shower.

Things to do in the Maldives

It's tempting to never leave your overwater villa and honestly, no one would blame you. But there's more to the Maldives than lying on a deck. A few experiences worth getting out of the hammock for:

Snorkel a house reef. Most resorts have their own house reef metres from the shoreline. Reef sharks, parrotfish, eagle rays and turtles are common sightings.

Dive with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay. From June to November, plankton blooms in this UNESCO biosphere reserve and hundreds of manta rays gather to feed. It's one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on Earth.

Swim with whale sharks in South Ari Atoll. Year-round whale shark sightings, gentle, plankton-eating giants up to 12 metres long.

Visit a sandbank. Resorts run picnic trips to tiny uninhabited sandbanks, a strip of sand in the middle of nowhere, just you and the ocean.

Dolphin cruise at sunset. Pods of spinner dolphins ride the bow waves of the boats. Wine in hand. Sky on fire. It writes itself.

Underwater dining. Several resorts (Conrad Rangali, Anantara Kihavah, OZEN Reserve Bolifushi) have signature underwater restaurants where you eat surrounded by aquarium glass and reef life.

Explore Malé. If you have a day, the capital is worth a wander, the Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque) built from carved coral, the local fish market, the Sultan Park, and a different, more textured side of Maldivian life.

Local island visits. Resort life is one experience; a half-day on a local inhabited island shows you a completely different one, Maldivian guesthouses, surfing villages, simple café food, traditional crafts.

Where to stay: resorts vs guesthouses

The Maldives has two distinct holiday personas.

Resort islands are private, single-property islands, one resort, one beach, one little world. These range from luxury (Soneva, Cheval Blanc, St. Regis, Waldorf Astoria, One&Only) to mid-tier (Centara, Kuredu, Meeru) and "affordable luxury" (Adaaran, Holiday Island). All-inclusive packages are popular and often the best value when you factor in food, drinks and water sports.

Guesthouse islands are a newer phenomenon since the government opened tourism to local islands in 2009. Inhabited islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Ukulhas, Dhigurah and Fulidhoo offer affordable guesthouses ($80–$200/night) and a more cultural experience. You won't get the overwater villa, but you can still snorkel, dive and island-hop for a fraction of resort prices.

How much does a Maldives holiday cost from Australia?

Realistically, budget A$5,000 - A$8,000 per person for a week at a mid-tier resort including flights, transfers and meals. Luxury resorts push that to A$15,000+ per person. Guesthouse island trips can come in under A$3,000 per person.
